Qualifications required:

  • GCSE grades A*-C or 4-9 in maths and English are required

Desired skills:
  • Working with wood in the past and used a variety of tools or can demonstrate good practical skills
  • Eye for detail, sufficient mathematics skills for working out measurements
Personal qualities:
  • Plenty of enthusiasm
  • Creative
  • Willing to learn new skills

Training provided:
The successful candidate will undertake a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Performing Manufacturing Operations, together with Functional Skills in maths and English where necessary


If you enjoy working with wood and want to put your practical skills to good use, this could be the ideal career for you. You'll need an eye for detail, sufficient mathematics skills for working out measurements and plenty of enthusiasm.

  • Fabricate bespoke play equipment for use in a range of play areas and schools
  • Active learning at the training provider based on the apprenticeship course structure
  • Cut and shape timber and other materials for children’s play towers
  • Manufacture roof joists, roof timbers, staircases and treads, partition walls, window frames and assembling doors, for wooden playground structures
  • Fitting out timber play houses and a range of timber buildings with cupboards and shelving, as well as fittings such as door handles and locks
  • Build temporary wooden supports to hold concrete in place while it sets, for example building foundations known as formwork
  • Making bespoke themed products for play areas, tourist attractions and holiday parks – there are exciting prospects ahead!
  • Learning manufacturing process and procedures, from orders to delivery, creating cutting list, bill of materials, quality control, health and Safety and good workshop practices
